The Night Messi Matched the Record
June 16, 2026. Kansas City. Argentina vs Algeria. Lionel Messi, 38 years old and playing what is almost certainly his final World Cup, scored a hat-trick to equal Miroslav Klose all-time record of 16 World Cup goals. A moment that stopped the football world.
The Goals
Messi opened the scoring with a free-kick in the 23rd minute — curled around the wall with his left foot, kissing the inside of the post. Goal 14 at World Cups. The second came in the 51st minute — a penalty after Julian Alvarez was brought down. Goal 15. And then the moment the entire stadium had been waiting for: the 67th minute, a driving run from deep, a one-two with De Paul, and a low finish across the goalkeeper. Goal 16. The record equalled. Kansas City erupted.
The Record
Miroslav Klose scored 16 World Cup goals across four tournaments (2002-2014). He held the record alone for 12 years. Now Messi shares it — in his fifth and final World Cup, at 38 years old, in a tournament many believed he was too old to attend.
The Reaction
Argentina captain Lautaro Martinez immediately embraced Messi. The Argentine fans in the stadium — thousands of blue and white shirts — produced one of the most emotional scenes in World Cup history. Messi himself, usually controlled in his celebrations, wept briefly before being mobbed by teammates.
Can He Break It?
Messi needs one more goal to set a new all-time record. Argentina have at least two more group matches. If they reach the knockout rounds — which is entirely plausible — he will almost certainly score again. Goal 17 would be the most historic moment in World Cup history. Watch this space.
